Pro Musicals presents 'Room Tamers'... a range of acoustical treatment products to assist in making your room sound neutral and true.

Room Tamers can help optimize the reception of auditory signals in any place where a clear acoustic environment and intelligibility of critical audio information is desired. They are available in multiple sizes and thicknesses, in order to handle response anomalies over different frequency ranges.  Customizable frames and fabric facades make it easy for you to fit them into your existing decor, or even create your own, unique aesthetic.

Room Tamers are completely modular... you can better the acoustics of your environment over time.... add more of them as spaces and finances permit. What's more, there is no permanent or destructive installation involved... you can move them around as frequently as you do... installation and uninstallation may take just a few minutes!

Room Tamers not only have the right density to be a perfect foil for unnecessary audio energy, they also have excellent thermal properties and are extremely fire retardant.

Vocal intelligibility is paramount for large scale installations such as concert halls, auditoriums, conference halls, hotels and restaurants, places of worship, class rooms, gymnasiums, workshops, factories and shopping complexes, Room Tamers are highly effective in assisting in this area of acoustics optimization. Please get in touch with us for a customized solution... our engineers are available to configure combination of Room Tamers which would optimally suit your specific environment.

If your environment is more 'room sized', such as studios and home theaters, please peruse our FAQ to best understand the benefits of Room Tamers.

FAQ for Musicians, Audio and AV Studios, Audiophile and Home Theater Enthusiasts:

Why do I need Room Tamers?

If music is the food for your soul, your music room is the dish in which you cook it. Would you cook your meal in a dish which is already coated with a random blend of spices and sugar, and perhaps, some mud? Can you predict how the meal would taste? Similarly, would you make your music or listen to it in a room which already has a characteristic, yet unpredictable sound of its own? How are you going to compensate for the difference between what your loudspeakers are putting out and what you are actually hearing? How can you ascertain if the music you are listening to meaningfully represents the intention of the artiste? How would you know if what you are hearing is a pure sonic image of your instrument, or a sound which is disproportionately colored by your performing / practicing environment? How can you judge if the material you are working on will sound right elsewhere, when the sound of your mix room is contributing greatly to your perception?

Your monitoring system is not merely your loudspeakers... It starts with your DA converters and ends with your ears... your loudspeakers and your room are equally vital, and in reality, intermediate, yet critical links in the chain. The relatively recent  affordability of competent audio technology has made it possible for anyone to own sufficiently 'flat response' DACs and loudspeakers... but what would be the point of a 'flat response loudspeaker' playing into a room with an extremely jagged response?

Enter Room Tamers, using the worlds most proven method of cleaning up the acoustic response of your room. Believe it or not, these will multiply the value of your monitors!

What do Room Tamers do and how do they do it?

Room Tamers essentially lower the reverberation time of your room... this means that you get to hear more of the music, and less of your room's characteristic anomalies. As we know, energy can neither be created, nor destroyed... it can only change from one form to another. When sound waves make contact with room Room Tamers, the friction transforms the acoustic energy into heat, which (conveniently enough) is absorbed by the Room Tamers themselves...

In control rooms and home theaters, Room Tamers help in clarifying the material coming out of the loudspeakers, and in recording areas they help the natural characteristics of your voice or instrument to shine through

How many do I need for my room and which ones do I need?

How many you would need depends tremendously on the size, layout and the intrinsic sound of your room, as well as the purpose of the room... Control rooms, recording areas, 2 channel audiophile listening rooms, home theaters with surround sound... all of them require slightly different approaches. As Room Tamers are modular, you can add more of them over time. If you are taking this approach, we suggest that you start with a few 6" traps in the corners of your room. These present the best value among our offerings and will make the most immediate and perceivable difference

Where and how should I place my traps?

* First reflection points that are not close to corners benefit optimally from 2" and 4" traps, while places where two walls or walls and ceilings meet benefit most from 4" and 6" traps. Sit at your listening position and have somebody run a mirror along the entire surface of your walls and ceiling. Wherever you can see the loudspeakers in the mirror, you have your resident evil first reflection points. Treating these areas will best increase the clarity and intelligibility over higher frequencies.

* Small rooms (20 cu. ft.) will tend to have a tremendous build up of lower frequencies, particularly towards the corners of the room. These frequencies are the most difficult and expensive to treat. Once an engineer has perfectly grasped the low frequency characteristic of his room, he has crossed the biggest hurdle in his path to producing great mixes. In order to find where the corner of your room is, close your eyes and run very fast until you hit a wall. Then drag your self along the wall till you hit another wall. Now you have found your corner. Repeat four times.

* As the trap gets thicker, the low frequency absorption potential is extended. This means that a 6" trap will perform much better than a 4" trap, at say, 100 Hz, while they may perform equally well at, say, 4 KHz. As the surface area of the insulation material is increased, the amount of absorption is increased. This simply means that more is usually better (but not always so).

* Room Tamers are best placed a couple of inches away from the surface behind them. This maximizes the potential as the surface area of available absorption is almost doubled!

Pro Musicals offers a range of hanging and mounting accessories, so that they can be placed just about anywhere. At the time of placing your order, our engineers will help you choose and mount your Room Tamers optimally.

Do Room Tamers do away with the need for acousticians and a totally customized solution?

Definitely not! Room Tamers are an effective, efficient and economical way to neutralize your acoustic environment. They are focused on the one point agenda of minimizing unnecessary reflections within a room. Professional studio design involves much more than this... sound isolation (from outside to inside and vice versa), electrical design, HVAC design, cabling, equipment specification, testing and commissioning are but a fraction of several intense, involved processes undertaken by a professional acoustician to create a totally customized solution, from the ground up. However the expense of this can be very significant, unnecessary for the purpose at hand, and impractical within the available spaces and constraints.

Room Tamers serve as tools for professional studios and acousticians, and convenient, practical, affordable solutions for everybody. If your room is rented, if you are likely to move or relocate or simply need a cheap and cheerful solution, you need Room Tamers. If you want to build a world class professional studio meant to last for decades, you'd do best to consult a professional acoustician. (Your acoustician will then integrate Room Tamers into his master plan!)

Pro Musicals also offers dedicated, personalized acoustical services ranging from consultation and schematics, all the way up to turnkey project management.
