Styled in silver, the SPL Crossover Mk2 is an active, analog 2-way crossover to coordinate your main speakers with your subwoofer, doing so without any DSP or analog-to-digital technology at all. The unit splits your signal, diverting midrange and high-range audio to your main monitors, and leaving the lows to route to the subs.
The design utilizes SPL's 120V rail technology to ensure high headroom and crystal-clear performance, and makes use of switches and pots to select among crossover frequencies, phase positions, low-level, and more. It's designed to work in both 2.1 and 2.2 setups, so if you utilize stereo subwoofers, this device will be suitable for your uses.
Crossing Over
The Crossover Mk2 is divided into two sections: The Low Pass section for the bass loudspeaker or subwoofer (mono or stereo) and the High Pass section for the top/main speakers.
The crossover frequencies for the Low Pass and High Pass can be set individually from 20 Hz to 3.6 kHz.
X-FREQ
With the respective three-position switch X-FREQ, the frequency range for the Low Pass or High Pass can be pre-set.
The following three options are possible:
- Switch position, top: 1.5 to 3.6 kHz
- Switch position, center: 300 to 700 Hz
- Switch position, bottom: 50 to 120 Hz
X-OVER | Hz
The X-OVER | Hz switch features six switching positions. This switch is used to pre-set the crossover frequency of the Low Pass or High Pass. Depending on the pre-selection made with the X-FREQ switch, 18 different crossover frequencies can be set.
X-FREQ switch position, top: 1.5 to 3.6 kHz:
- 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, 2.6, 3, 3.6 kHz
X-FREQ switch position, top: 300 to 720 Hz:
- 300, 360, 420, 510, 600, 720 Hz
X-FREQ switch position, bottom: 50 to 120 Hz:
- 50, 60, 70, 85, 100, 120 Hz
Roll-Off
The slope of the Low Pass respectively High Pass can be switched from 12 to 24 dB with the Roll-Off switch.
Low Cut
In addition, there is also a low-cut filter. This filter frees both paths, the Low Pass and High Pass, from unwanted frequencies below 20 Hz. This means that the power amplifier does not have to amplify inaudible low frequencies and the loudspeaker is discharged.
Phase
The three-position toggle switch Phase can be used to activate phase control. The dedicated control is used to establish synchronization.
If the toggle switch Phase is in the top position (VAR 0°), a value between 0 and 180° can be set using the control.
If the toggle switch Phase is in the top position (VAR -180°), a value between 0 and -180° can be set via the control, thus allowing a control range of 360°.
If the phase control is not required, it can be switched off (OFF) and thus disappears completely from the signal path.
LP and HP Outputs
If you want to connect two bass loudspeakers or subwoofers (one for L and one for R), the LP OUTPUT switch should be set to stereo. If you only use one bass loudspeaker or subwoofer, switch to mono. The crossover creates a mono signal of the Low frequencies and outputs it to both Low outputs (L + R).
If you prefer to run the top/main speakers full-range, you can switch off the HIGH PASS filter.
Subwoofer Volume
The playback volume of the bass loudspeaker or subwoofer can be varied from -10 to +10 dB. In addition to the purely corrective adjustment of the speaker system, you can add more bass into recordings that lack low end.
Balanced I/O
- Gold-plated RCA and XLR sockets are available as connections for each stereo input and stereo output. This allows the Crossover Mk2 to be integrated into any setup without the need for additional adapters.
- On the output side, the signal is always present at the RCA and XLR outputs.
- On the input side, the INPUT switch is used to switch between the XLR and RCA inputs.
- Crossover Mk2 can be switched on with the ON switch (switch is in the top position).
Amp Control
The standby mode for up to four devices with 12V trigger input can be switched on and off via AMP CTL, together with the Crossover Mk2 (AMP CTL Out). This is especially useful for connecting power amplifiers. But also the standby mode of the Crossover Mk2 itself can be switched on and off by a preamplifier, such as the Director Mk2, Elector, or the Phonitor x via AMP CTL (AMP CTL In).
VOLTAiR Technology
- The 120V technology works with ±60 V. To be able to handle such a high voltage, we have developed special proprietary operational amplifiers that can operate with a DC voltage of ±60 V: the SPL 120V SUPRA operational amplifiers. This high voltage would destroy conventional components and operational amplifiers.
- The 120V technology achieves exceptional technical specifications and sonic benefits. Technically, in terms of dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and headroom. Sonically, in terms of richness of detail and an absolutely relaxed listening experience.
- SPL devices with VOLTAiR technology can handle input levels of +32.5 dBu thanks to the higher internal operating voltage of ±60 volts—thus offering 12 dB more headroom over ±15 audio devices. All components consequently operate continuously in the optimum operating range, resulting in a very pleasant, natural, and relaxed sound experience, so you can enjoy your music in every detail.
