The SPL GainStation 1 AD Single-Channel Mic & Instrument PreAmp with A/D Converter is a single-channel microphone and instrument preamplifier that may improve the quality of your digital recordings through analog sound processing.

The majority of audio production uses digital technologies for recording and mixing, but digital systems often lack the quality and texture of high-end analog equipment. SPL developed the GainStation 1 to help engineers recreate analog sound in digital situations. This preamplifier aims to enhance a signal’s sonic foundation and visually enhance it, addressing the challenge of competing with open and transparent analog sound. SPL invested significant engineering time and effort in creating this innovative solution.

The GainStation 1 AD is a small form that allows for unrestricted installation outside of a rack and closer to the microphone. Musicians may easily mount it on a rack, amplifier, or practically any place they want to produce analog music. To facilitate mobility, the optional SPL GainBag helps ensure the GainStation 1’s safe travel to and from a show or session, as well as additional storage for cables and various-sized microphones. Furthermore, the case design facilitates access to the unit’s inputs and outputs. For more permanent installations, up to four GainStation 1s can be rack mounted in a single, optional 4-unit rack mounting frame.

Guitarists and bassists can also benefit from using the GainStation 1 because their instruments will pass via the analog path and warm up with the preamp’s analog “sound engine.” With a more genuine analog feel to the texture of the signal, less EQ will be required, avoiding a potential flaw in the digital audio domain. In many cases, signal compression is unnecessary since the preamp will accomplish it on its own—via its tubes—in the analog realm. This can also free up computer processing power, which can improve the end output significantly.

The GainStation 1 AD is intended to provide effective sound-shaping capabilities at the moment of recording, particularly through the tube stage. It may be fully bypassed or continually fed to the preamp circuit, allowing for everything from slight “warmth” to a notable tube saturation effect. The inbuilt limiter can be used to prevent an internal or external AD converter from clipping, or to provide punch to drum sounds, reducing or eliminating the need for further compression. Simply put, the GainStation 1 is designed to enhance tracks to the point that the mix becomes easier to manage as a result of better track sound quality.

The GainStation 1 AD is a versatile recording device that features independent solid-state and tube preamplifiers, a Peak/FET limiter, and a configurable mic-input impedance. It can be used to increase tube saturation or turned off for cleaner recording results. The unit also has a 60V operating voltage, twice that of many ordinary amps, enhancing its dynamic range. Encapsulated relays with gold-plated contacts handle switching duties, resulting in lower noise performance and optimal connection conditions. The power supply includes extra shielding to reduce noise interference.

The Analog/Digital Converter Module 1090 is the GainStation 1 AD has digital output portion, featuring a plug-and-play design for simple installation. It provides a S/P-DIF output with both coaxial and optical connections in parallel. The module’s heart is a 24-bit converter capable of sampling at up to 192 kHz. Quartz oscillators contribute to a stable master clock with minimal jitter levels. The internal sampling rate is adjustable between 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96 kHz. Other sample rates (32, 176.4, and 192 kHz) are determined by external synchronization.

To avoid interference, the internal oscillators are immediately turned off when an external clock signal is detected. A voltage-stabilizing circuit ensures that the converter receives sufficient and consistent voltage at all times, which is essential for clean, clear audio. The small design reduces the signal route to the converter. Grounding surfaces on both sides of the circuit board minimize interference and provide proper separation of analog and digital components.

SPL GAINSTATION 1 AD PREAMP WITH DIGITAL OUTPUT FEATURES:
  •  Separated. Solid-state and tube preamplifiers. The tube preamp may be added to the solid-state stage to offer variable degrees of tube saturation, from subtle to harsh.
  •  Limiter for peak and FET signals.
  •  Switchable microphone input impedance (200 Ohms, 1, 2, and 10 kOhms).
  •  Our class A op-amps are custom-made and entirely discrete, with a 60 V rail working voltage that is twice as high as most ordinary op-amps, resulting in an astonishing dynamic range.
  •  Encapsulated relays with gold-plated contacts control all switch operations.
  •  The amplifier has a high slew rate of <40V/µs, allowing for clean transmission of high-frequency signals and fast transients with little clipping.
  •  The signal route is nearly DC-coupled, eliminating the need for degenerating condensers.
  •  An optimized layout minimizes signal routes while grounding surfaces are suitably scaled for low impedance and maximum shielding.
  •  Extensive listening tests were conducted to choose resistors with a tolerance of 0.1%.
  •  The power supply features considerable insulation and seven individually wound and controlled voltages.
  •  The tube stage uses excellent MKP foil condensers and a select 12 AX7 LPS tube to deliver clean and powerful sounds.
  •  Optional 24/192 AD converter and Lundahl input transformer are supplied.
  •  Made in Germany.

SPL GainStation 1 AD is a discrete Class-A op-amps having a 60V operating voltage.

  •  A high amplifier slew rate ensures clear transmission of high-frequency signals and quick transients without clipping.
  •  The signal route is mostly DC-coupled.
  •  Optimized signal route for low impedance and maximum shielding.
  •  To ensure consistent performance, all resistors have a tolerance of 0.1%.
