The Phonitor Matrix powers the innovative headphone playback technology you’re about to encounter, making monitoring on headphones sound like monitoring on speakers. This is significant since the majority of music is designed to be played via speakers rather than headphones. SPL’s revolutionary Phonitor Matrix distinguishes Pro-Fi Series headphone amps from all others, eliminating the irritating “super stereo” sound and the overhyped reproduction of reverberation and effects to deliver music exactly as it should be heard.

Speakers and headphones convey music in very different ways. That is why music mixed for headphones does not “sound right” on speakers (or vice versa). The Phonitor Matrix levels the playing field by adjusting three parameters: crossfeed, speaker angle, and center level. In Phonitor, the Centre Level is set at 1dB and the Speaker Angle to 30 degrees, which SPL has established are the most prevalent real-world settings. The Crossfeed option controls the crosstalk between the left and right channels, known as the inter-aural level difference. You may adjust the strength of the CrossFeed using two front-panel switch locations, C1 and C2.

The aim is infallible headphone monitoring accuracy, and SPL provides Phonitor with a beautiful, uncomplicated interface that does the job. Two gold-plated RCA connections provide analog input. If you want digital input, the Phonitor se + DAC includes the extra DAC768xs module, which supports three additional digital sources: USB, Coax, and Optical. On output, the Phonitor se’s strong amplification stage delivers enough power to drive even the most demanding electrostatic headphones. The SPL Phonitor SE, like other SPL products, employs only high-quality components. You’ll enjoy the “spoon-in-honey” sensation as you move the large machined aluminum Volume knob, which is linked to a genuine Alps RK27 Big Blue potentiometer.
